Like the title indicates, I started writing this a few hours after learning Merle Haggard died and pretty much finished it within a day or so; most of it was written on the train. Everything felt surreal.

By Bliss Bowen

The sun hit my window my feet hit the floor
I put on the kettle for tea
My dog thumped her tail and I opened the door
She ran toward that old oak tree
The mockingbird who wakes me had silenced his song
Still it seemed like just another day
A call on the phone told me how I was wrong
I hung up with too much to say

I thought about heroes who don’t disappoint
Who wear their own kind of hat
And how they become ones we love and anoint
The truth honored in that pact
I heard a quiet rumble far out past the hill
Like a hymn sung from the other side
It felt like a storm wind yet leaves hung so still
Today Merle Haggard died

I thought about rivers and circles of time
And how his mama tried
The man who sang his way home’s made his last climb
Today Merle Haggard died
Today Merle Haggard died
